Bing Crosby sings Poor Little G String

In 1930 Bing Crosby filmed a sequence for the MGM musical "March of Time". The film was never completed and most of the footage lost except for some segments that were included in a later film. The footage in which Bing sang 'Poor Little G String' was lost however the soundtrack survived as heard here together with a montage of visuals to simulate what might have been.

One of the very few LIVE recordings that featured Bing Crosby as he performed at the famed Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel Los Angeles. The footage is a combination of shots that I filmed in the mid 1990's and actual footage of the Cocoanut Grove and Gus Arnheim & his Orchestra. The girl singing with Bing is the resident female vocalist Loyce Whiteman.

The Cocoanut Grove as shown here, had their own entrance-separate from the main of the Ambassador Hotel. Also, unbeknownst to me, until this last year or so, (through viewing pics and videos of the property) there was a 'pony' golf course that wrapped around the sides and back of the hotel-that had to be neat to play.

as long as it's actually the legendary Cocoanut Grove in the 20's or 30's, (which it is), is all I need. Love the footage showing the cigarette girl hoofing it through the throng.

It says in the title 1931, but those aren't cars circa 1931...
But clearly, the video where Bing sings is dated from that era....

a duh! Obviously not, but even the snippet at the beginning shows the separate entrance to the legendary Cocoanut Grove in what? the 70's? As a connoisseur of 'all things' in Hollywood/LA, even if the pics/videos are of venues such as this, well past their prime, it's part of the history of the place. What I'd like to know is, is the small par three golf course that occupied both sides of th property at one time, still there in the 70's?. That had to be a treat,. as an activity while a guest at the hotel.
The entrance in that 90s era video was built in the 60s.

+harryoakley I believe that she was his daughter. At least that's what my research shows. If you still disagree, fill me in on her family background. Believe that I'm correct, but who knows with all the sources out there, not all are always correct.
+memorylanefrank You believe wrong; just read any biography of Paul Whiteman. Even easier is to look up Loyce Whiteman on Wikipedia.
+harryoakley Wikipedia is where I Confirmed she was Pop's Whitman's daughter. Believe I also saw it in George Simon's Big Band book.

His band was the 'house' band at the Grove in the 20's and 30's-nice gig I'd say.
The previous comments helped me understand the relationship between the audio and the video. Taken together the clip is a wonderful recreation of both the era and Bing's initial steps to stardom. Thanks to Duncs2677.
Oh, he was already quite a star by 1931.
By 1931 he was up there, but not as a solo so much. The Rhythm Boys were still with Paul Whiteman, I think and it was only a year or two later he started a solo career.

The ambience of the period comes accross in the combination of sound and vision (at least for me!)
The venue was 'thee' place to be seen in Hollywood/LA in the 20's, 30's & 40's.

If I'm not mistaken, all or most of this presentation was originally shot in color, with the exception of Bing, but were turned to B&W to match Bing's B&W footage. Mr jaykdiamond was a bit harsh in his treatment of this film, but was essentially right. It's not necessarily misleading, but it's not accurate in it's portrayal of a contiguous historic night at the Cocoanut Grove.
A cute song, and illustrative of the good natured joshing likely to have been customary for Bing Crosby and fellow celebrities like Mr. Oakie and Ms Whiteman during Gus Arnheim's Coconut Grove days. These were all successful young people during a financially grim time in history who were very aware of their immense good fortune-
I don't know what all the fuss is about. The vision obviously doesn't match the sound but it's only supposed to be a visual representation. If you were fooled then you're the fool! Great clip - good work.

How dare you post such a distored viewpoint. I never intended the images to be an exact representation matching the audio. If you read my description above it states quite clearly that the footage is a combination of shots - some of the Arheim band, others from "Star Night at the Cocoanut Grove" and general shots of Bing singing which I used from his Sennett short "I Surrender Dear". I will apologise to no-one - I'm only sorry that someone like you has had a chance to log in and view this.
This is a dishonest presentation. The video has zero to do with the audio. The poster if he had any ethics would have not tried to fool people. This video is from one of the six Mack Sennett shorts Crosby did with Sennett in 1930-31, and there is different audio which this dishonest poster took out and superimposed the “What is it?” number that is a radio transcription that was never filmed ! This poster owes UA-cam, all the viewers, and also Bing Crosby an apology for a cheezy deception !

What a wonderful visual montage you have displayed here!
My father (age 17+ at the time) was there, possibly on the night this was recorded. The Take Two release included some live as well as some on-site recordings. I asked him about this and he said it sounded exactly as he remembered it, even the comic repartee with Loyce Whiteman. On the dance floor my dad bumped in to Myrna Loy's fanny. She turned and said, "It was fun, wasn't it?"

I was looking for years for this recording with the only release being on the "That's Entertainment" CD set released by Rhino. As I didn't want to pay more than $80 for the song I avoided it and finally got a copy from a collector friend of mine only to discover that I could have downloaded when ever I had wanted it from itunes for a small charge. Go to itunes and search for "Thats Entertainment,The Ultimate Anthology" It's listed as song 110

saw this again and i believe bing was inserted into this from another recording. one can see that he is singing something else, maybe "auf wiedersehn" from another sennett short. bing certainly did perform in the CG, but not in this film.
wow! must be one of the rarest film recordings of all time! i believe the girl is loyce whitman who recorded "ho-hum" with bing in "31 and the gus arnheim orch. incidentally, that is prob arnheim's orch. in the film and in it was bing's only serious rival in the early 30's, violinist then, russ columbo.
